East Anglian Orthopaedic Club Meeting – 18th November 2016

Dear Friends,

It gives us great pleasure to welcome all of you to the Annual Meeting of the East Anglian Orthopaedic Club to be held on the 18th of November at The Apex in Bury St. Edmunds.

We are pleased to announce our scientific programme which promises to be both educational and informative. We have introduced the concept of a theme for the Annual Conference and the theme for this year is ‘Clinical Trials in Orthopaedics’. To go along with this year’s theme, we have invited Prof. Joe Dias from Leicester and he will talk about ‘Setting Up Clinical Trials and Assessing their Impact’, Prof. Andrew McCaskie from Cambridge who will be talking about ‘Clinical Trials in Regenerative Orthopaedics’, Dr. Catriona McDaid from the York Surgical Trials Unit and she will talk about ‘Research Methodology in Clinical Trials’, Mr. Peter Hull from Addenbrooke’s will be giving an ‘Overview of the KFORT trial’ and I will be taking about the ‘Bone Therapeutics trial for Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head’.

In addition, the meeting also includes Invited Lectures from Mr. Lee Van Rensburg (Addenbrooke’s Hospital) who will provide us with an ‘Update on the Major Trauma Centre and its Impact’ and from Mr. Mick Crumplin who has a special interest in Napoleonic wars and has studied medicine and surgical history in this war and several other wars for over 45 years will talk on ‘Losing Sight of the Glory – the Crimean War to Helmand’.

We have had an immense academic interest in our meeting this time with over 50 abstracts being submitted for presentation. The scientific quality of the submissions from the trainees has also been good, and has therefore generated fierce competition for the top slots. To make this more exciting, competitive and also to give a chance to all the trainees to present, we have introduced a new session called “JAM – Just A Minute”. We will include the top 16 abstracts for the standard podium presentation of six minutes and the remaining submissions which are of high quality will be entered into the JAM session. This will involve the trainee presenting their work for 1 minute with 1 slide! We also also decided to keep a separate Best Paper and the Runner-Up Award for the JAM Session.

The meeting also has a large Instructional component for the Consultants with a Symposium organised by Mrs. Lisa Hadfield-Law, BOA Surgical Educator. Lisa facilitates educational and clinical supervisor training for T&O surgeons around the UK and Ireland. She will run a 90 minute session for us: the first 60 minutes will be for those who did not attend last years session and the final 30 minutes will focus on new aspects of the T&O curriculum and workplace based assessments, which will be relevant to everyone’s practice. At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
1. Define their role in assessment and T&O training.
2. Integrate tips and tricks into their own practice with minimum effort but maximum impact on T&O training.
3. Identify new elements which will impact on their role as a T&O trainer.

We welcome all our Guest Speakers and the EAOC is proud to host these eminent and distinguished individuals. We have had a great time putting this programme together for you and we cordially welcome all of you to Bury St. Edmunds.

Very Best Wishes,
Vikas Khanduja MA, MSc, FRCS (Orth). Scientific Chairman – EAOC 2016.

Mr. Willem Schenk FRCS (Orth). Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Bury St Edmunds.
