Dear all

with the expansion of the training rotation, an exciting opportunity has presented itself to all hospitals within the EOE region.

The EOE clinical FRCS teaching program is evolving rapidly and apologies are proffered for any confusion generated by the addition/format of recent teaching days.

The EAOC meeting will be an opportunity to address any questions regarding the regional teaching agenda personally, but we are placing guidelines on this website, as it is clearly the “tannoy” for the rotation, and orthopaedics generally within the East of England.

Suggested EOE FRCS monthly clinical teaching format:

At least one whole day (e.g. 10 – 17:00h) every calendar month will be dedicated to interactive, case based clinical & viva teaching to prepare trainees for the FRCS exam.

To prevent trainees missing out on regular training opportunities such as theatre, clinics and oncalls, the actual day of the week will be varied and determined by the hosting site.

This will also mean that hospitals around the region will have the opportunity to provide a range of keen and enthusiastic trainers to convene the FRCS teaching day, rather than being limited to those who are free on Thursdays.

This benefits all hospitals, because trainees will be present more often within their institute, and so able to contribute to service delivery, rather than losing a Thursday every month.

The starting time should permit trainees the ability to arrive from upto 2 hours away, given the geographical distribution.

Trainee feedback from the first whole day clinical FRCS teaching has been extremely positive. Constructive feedback for organisers is:

  • Clinical cases for examination

Teaching should be fun😃

  • provide advance notice of clinical subject areas being examined to allow preparation.

Teaching should be fun😃

  • Incorporate 1 clinically relevant paper to be critiqued and presented by a trainee, which will be published in a “key papers for FRCS” section of the website.

Teaching should be fun😃

  • An FRCS positive, trainee should be involved on the day to conduct a 5 min basic science tutorial for the junior tutorials. This will ensure that key topics that are not taught clinically are still covered before the FRCS exam.

Teaching should be fun😃

  • The whole 2013 syllabus should be covered over a 4 year cycle. This will require liaison with a regional education director to inform what topics have been addressed on particular days. An upto date summary will be visible on this website in the teaching tab in due course.

Teaching should be fun😃

Training simulation days will also be arranged and advertised throughout the year, but will be additional to the clinical & vivas FRCS teaching. If you have an idea for such a day or already run them then coordination through the regional education director and this website will make it easier for you and maximise your attendance.

Teaching should be fun😃

Any subspecialty courses being run in the region will be encouraged to be advertised on this website, especially if supporting local trainees’ development & needs. Similarly, trainees will be supported to attend national courses if free, such as London Hip Meeting etc (remember this is coming from a shoulder surgeon!)

Teaching should be fun😃

An annual mock FRCS exam so that trainees will become familiar with the requirements and an opportunity for consultant trainers to hone their potential into becoming FRCS examiners.

Teaching should be fun😃

As the program matures we will adapt and evolve to provide our trainees the ultimate in opportunities that Carlsberg will describe as probably the best orthopaedic & trauma training in the world.

Teaching should be fun😃

Locally there has been an increase in weekly teaching, for example, on Friday mornings at Addenbrookes there is trauma teaching where the trainees are given FRCS level vivas on cases and the key papers discussed. If your hospital runs this then please let us know and we shall advertise on the website to encourage other local trainees to attend if they are available.

Teaching should be fun😃

Look forward to seeing many of you at the EAOC meeting next Friday, where you can advance your ideas further.
