An EDUCATIONAL message from Mr Kang

Dear all

Welcome to the new ST3s and hope the summer holidays have refreshed you all.

You’ll have noticed that we have a new T&O administrator, Jamie Biggs (, who has made life easier for all.

I’d like to thank Majeed Shakokani for “stepping up to the plate” as the Educational Lead for trainees, following his success in passing the FRCS.

We’ve acted upon your feedback from teaching days and you will note that there are a variety of subspecialty days to cover the entire curriculum & the delegates will be divided into different groups based upon their ST year. This should help pitch the teaching at the appropriate level, whilst keeping it fun & interactive.

All we ask of you is to contact Jamie Biggs to inform him that you shall be attending. This is vital because:

  1. We can arrange enough lunch & refreshments.
  2. The faculty can arrange appropriate groups & timetable the day.

It is easier for us to have less people turn up than unexpected trainees on the day.

There are 3 other important financial reasons for us to know if you are attending  teaching days.

  1. we are competing with all surgical specialties in the EOE for a single pot of money
  2. The attendance & feedback on each day will be used to justify the deanery giving us money.
  3. The study budget has been cut by 30% nationally, and I have every faith that you can help us obtain those remaining funds.

(Don’t just) Save the dates, tell your rota coordinator & book leave locally, email Jamie (, Julie Graham ( for cadaveric courses etc…
